In Kharkov, they have already instructed the architects to select a place for the monument to the deceased mayor Gennady Kernes. It is also planned to name the street and the metro after him, Igor Terekhov, secretary of the Kharkiv City Council, said at a briefing.

“Today I gave a task to the architects so that they prepare several locations for me where this monument can be erected. We will bring this issue up for discussion when the locations are ready, there are already some,” he said.

According to Terekhov, it is not yet clear what the monument will be, because there are different opinions about its appearance, including the family of the deceased mayor.

In addition, he considers it a “holy duty” to name Kernes street or avenue. However, he noted that this requires a decision of the toponymic commission.

Terekhov also took the initiative to name the metro station after Kernes.

“We will not yet say whether it will be a new station or renamed. But the fact that it appears is our sacred duty,” the official said.

  • Kernes died on December 17 due to complications from COVID-19. The funeral and farewell to the mayor are scheduled for December 23.
  • Now the duties of Kernes are performed by Terekhov. According to the law, he must, within 15 days, send an appeal to the Rada, which, in turn, must appoint new elections no later than 90 days later. However, in practice, this process can be delayed until the next scheduled elections, as it was in Lutsk.
