The mayor of Sumy was suspected of taking a bribe

Law enforcement officers reported suspicions to the mayor of the city of Sumy, who was exposed for receiving a bribe in the amount of more than 2 million hryvnia. This was reported by the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office on Tuesday, October 3.

“The official’s actions are qualified under Part 4 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. His accomplice, the director of the Department of Infrastructure of the Sumy Region, was also charged with Part 4 of Art. 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine,” the message says.

The investigation established that the officials demanded money for resolving the issue of establishing by the executive committee of the Sumy City Council for one of the companies a new economically justified tariff for the management of household waste and not creating artificial obstacles for it in carrying out business activities.

During November 2022 – October 2023, officials received bribes totaling UAH 2.13 million.

On Monday, October 2, the mayor of the city and the director of the department were exposed “in the heat” immediately after receiving 1.43 million UAH.

The issue of choosing a preventive measure for the suspect is now being decided. The prosecutor will insist on the application of preventive measures in the form of detention with the alternative of posting bail.

It is known that the post of city mayor of Sumy is occupied by Alexander Lysenko.
