The current Foreign Minister Liz Truss has been elected as the new leader of the Conservative Party and, accordingly, the head of the British government. This became known on Monday, September 5.

The results of the Conservative Party vote were announced today. Liz Truss received 81,326 British Conservative votes, while former finance minister Rishi Sunak garnered 60,399 votes.

Thus, Liz Truss became the new head of the ruling Conservative Party and automatically Prime Minister of Great Britain.

“It is an honor for me to be elected leader of the Conservative Party. Thank you for organizing one of the longest job interviews in history,” Truss said after the announcement of the results.

It should be noted that Liz Truss became the third female prime minister in the history of the United Kingdom after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May.

Now Truss, together with outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson, on Tuesday, September 6, will go to the Scottish residence of the Queen – Balmoral Castle – to meet with Elizabeth II. There, Johnson would formally resign, and the Queen would appoint Truss as the new prime minister of Great Britain. Thus, Liz Truss will become the 15th prime minister appointed by Elizabeth II.

Traditionally, the British monarch appointed prime ministers at Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle, but this time doctors advised the queen not to leave Scotland.
