Canada has sent a small group of security forces from the Canadian Special Operations Regiment (CSOR), an elite unit of the armed forces, to Ukraine.
The presence of Canadian special forces in Ukraine is an attempt by NATO to contain Russian aggression in Ukraine and determine ways to help the Ukrainian government.
The unit was also tasked with helping develop an evacuation plan for Canadian diplomats in the event of a full-scale Russian invasion.
According to the press secretary of the regiment, Amber Beano, the aforementioned Canadian special forces have been working in Ukraine since 2020. He specializes in training, as well as testing instructors and military leadership.
At the same time, sources told Global News that the purpose of the last special forces contingent, which left for Ukraine around January 9, is not training.
